As part of the informal settlements upgrading programme, the HDA commissioned this report to update existing analysis on the profile of informal settlements in South Africa, nationally and provincially as well as for some of the larger municipalities. The analysis draws heavily on newly released Census 2011 data and also explores other data sources available at a national, provincial and municipal level to characterise conditions in informal settlements and to identify key trends.
